Cryptogenic Stroke

چکیده
Cryptogenic stroke (CS) is defined as the infarction of the brain that is not attributable to a source of definite cradioembolic (CE), large artery atherosclerosis (LAA), or small artery disease (SAD) despite extensive vascular, cardiac and serologic evaluation. The term Cryptogenic stroke (CS) was first used in the National Institute of Neurologic Disease and Stroke (NINDS) Data bank1. The TOAST (trial of ORG10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment)1 classification of subtypes of acute ischaemic stroke conceived the term ‘Stroke of Undetermined etiology’. Similar terminology in the literature includes cryptogenous stroke, infracts of unknown, uncertain, or undetermined cause.

Cryptogenic subtype predicts reduced survival among cancer patients with ischemic stroke.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cryptogenic stroke is common in patients with cancer. Autopsy studies suggest that many of these cases may be because of marantic endocarditis, which is closely linked to cancer activity. We, therefore, hypothesized that among patients with cancer and ischemic stroke, those with cryptogenic stroke would have shorter survival. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed all adul...
متن کاملClinical Sciences Prediction of Cardioembolic, Arterial, and Lacunar Causes of Cryptogenic Stroke by Gene Expression and Infarct Location
Background and Purpose—The cause of ischemic stroke remains unclear, or cryptogenic, in as many as 35% of patients with stroke. Not knowing the cause of stroke restricts optimal implementation of prevention therapy and limits stroke research. We demonstrate how gene expression profiles in blood can be used in conjunction with a measure of infarct location on neuroimaging to predict a probable c...
متن کاملCharacteristics of cryptogenic stroke in cancer patients.
OBJECTIVE To clarify the characteristics of cryptogenic stroke in patients with active cancer. METHODS Patients with or without cancer diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke between January 2006 and February 2015 were extracted from a prospectively collected stroke database of Osaka University Hospital. Patients were categorized according to the presence of active cancer and known stroke mechan...

متن کاملNon-cardioembolic Mechanisms in Cryptogenic Stroke: Clinical and Diffusion-weighted Imaging Features
BACKGROUND The role of several cardiogenic risk factors, including patent foramen ovale, in patients with cryptogenic stroke has been extensively studied. However, little attention has been paid to the role of non-cardioembolic causes of cryptogenic stroke. We therefore sought to identify the characteristics of cryptogenic stroke. METHODS We studied 832 patients with acute infarction in the m...
متن کاملAge as a determinant of adverse events in medically treated cryptogenic stroke patients with patent foramen ovale.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is associated with cryptogenic stroke. There is no study that assessed the effect of age on adverse event rates in cryptogenic stroke patients with PFO. The purpose of this retrospective analysis from PFO in Cryptogenic Stroke Study (PICSS) database was to assess the effect of age on the risk of adverse events in medically treated cryptogenic st...
